Stabbed in the Back

Image
Trevor rushed over to me, yelling from the other room. “Put the TV on!” “What’s going on?” He turned on the news and my heart sank in dread; we had a homicide case to solve, and the victim was a minor. The ME was standing over the body when we arrived at the school as a couple was holding each other while crying on a bench. Trevor went to talk to them and I approached the ME. “What have you found?” I asked. “The victim is Amber Stevens, aged 16. She has seven stab wounds on her torso.” “Was the murder weapon found?” “Not yet.” The body was rushed to the morgue, while Trevor and I swept the crime scene. We only found one thing: a size-six footprint. Amber’s parents had no valuable information to give us, so we moved on to her classmates and teachers; all of them had nothing but praise for her. Later that day, the ME told us that the murder had taken place somewhere between midnight and 2:00 a.m. Moreover, she said that Amber was six weeks pregnant at the time. We then visited her house ...

“No, please don’t kill me!” “Kerry, wake up! You’re having a nightmare!” I opened my eyes to find my husband by my side. “Is it the same one again?” “Yes.” “Maybe we should make an appointment with a therapist.” “No, I don’t need a therapist; I need to know that my parents’ killer will remain behind bars.” “I’ll try my best, but there’s so much that even I can do.” “If he gets out, I’m killing him.” “Sawyer’s just six years old; I don’t want him losing his mother right now. Besides, the man has been inside for 25 years now.” “Yes, Roy, but I also know that I won’t be able to rest until he’s dead.” Roy sighed, getting to his feet. “There’s no point talking when you’re like this,” he said before leaving the room. I tried closing my eyes, but that man’s face still crept into my head. I got off the bed and went to Sawyer’s room. Roy was sitting beside him as he slept. “He’s smiling in his sleep. You think it’ll be the same if you were in jail?” I didn’t answer. I stayed with them for...

Abducted

Two children in our neighborhood had gone missing recently. In both instances, there had been a blue van parked in the vicinity. The same thing had happened six years ago, but the children were never found. It was unsettling; my husband and I were scared for our children. We weren’t the only ones. No children were allowed to ride their bicycles or play in the yard unsupervised. Moreover, we had jobs to do, so we couldn’t watch our sons constantly. We dropped them off at school and my mom picked them up until we came to get them. She kept them at her palace until we got off. One morning, however, I woke up two hours late. “Jacob, we overslept!” “What? I didn’t even hear the alarm.” I quickly rushed to the children’s room to wake them up. Their beds were empty, and the lampshades laid shattered on the floor. My heart began to pound as I frantically ran to the closet. It was empty. I checked under the beds; they weren’t there either. I called out to the boys as I felt my stomach wring at ...

Betrayed

I woke up to darkness; a lightless, hazy night. A faint fog permeated the air around me, impairing my vision from grasping the figures ahead. I got to my feet and looked around. There was hardly a voice or whisper in the wind, save the soft rustling of trees. As I took some steps forward, the scenery before me became clearer: rows of stone slabs were on the ground; some stood tall, while others laid crumbled. Am I in a cemetery? Suddenly, I sensed a presence approach me. However, I could neither hear nor see anyone . The wind grew stronger — h eavier — as if it were whirling towards me. I was ready to run when a voice called out to me from behind. "Sonia?" The winds subsided, and I recognised the voice. It was one I hadn't heard in a year. I quickly turned around and was left speechless the second our eyes met. It was my late husband standing before me. “Glen, is that really you?” “Yes, but what are you doing here?” “Am I... Am I dead?” “Yes, but how did this happen?” “I ...
