The Selkies' Curse: Part II

“This is crazy.” “It’s about to get crazier, because I need your help.” “For what?” “To break the curse.” “How am I supposed to do that?” “You’re the chosen one; I’m sure of it.” “And how exactly do you know that?” “You have a seal-like birthmark on your ankle. That’s part of the prophecy our people believe.” “Just because I have a birthmark doesn’t mean I can break the curse.” “No, you have powers as well.” The selkie asked me to hold his hand. I complied. He held it to his forehead and, within seconds, visions of their past flooded my head. He was telling the truth. I then saw my mother; she was battling a monster with magic. She took it down, but another one got her from behind. I was overcome with rage. The air around me began to swirl and the ground began to shake. The selkie yelled and brought me back to my senses. I asked what his name was to thank him. He said it was Zaros. The both of us then left for my house. There, I went through my mother’s belongings in the basement and f

The Selkies' Curse: Part I

I was swimming in the sea when I felt something touch my leg. I noticed that it was a seal and immediately swam back to the shore. I joined my friends Steph and Drake and told them what happened; Drake said it was probably a seal prince and I told him to kiss it and find out. We walked back to my house and had a long chat before the both of them left. That night, the calmness of the sea didn’t help me sleep as it did the times before. I was awoken by nightmares of seals of all things. I saw a seal crawl into my bedroom and transform into a man. I hate Drake… I went downstairs and put the TV on; a fantasy movie was running. However, even the movie brought up the same topic: a young woman kissed a seal and it turned into a man before her eyes. I switched the TV off and went back to bed. Not long after, I was woken up by the same nightmare. I decided to research the topic. An hour passed. I found myself deep in a rabbit hole of selkie lore; some considered them to be monsters, while oth

Death of Love

It was Valentine's Day and I was waiting at a restaurant for Thomas. He was late again. Thomas promised he would work on our relationship the day I asked for a divorce, but it was getting clearer to me that he didn’t really mean it. I called him several times, but he didn’t pick up. I was frustrated. I was about to leave when my phone rang. It was him. He said he was called in for an important mission. He could’ve at least given me a quick call or even left a message before making me wait for over half an hour. I told him we were done and cut the call; he rang me again, but I didn’t answer. I went home and got ready for bed. Later that night, I woke up sweating. I saw Thomas getting killed in action. I grabbed the phone while my hands trembled. There was a message from him saying he was sorry for not calling me sooner. I felt guilty. I didn’t want that to be the last thing I ever said to him—I wouldn’t have been able to forgive myself if something happened to him. I was restless

Cursed in the Sea

It was Sunday, yet the beach was empty; a sight I had never seen in my town. It appeared that no one was taking the rumours lightly, regardless of how far-fetched they were. I turned back and resumed my journey to the bookshop when the wind carried a faint voice towards me. I looked around, but saw no one. The voice was there again; it was faint, but I could’ve sworn it was a cry for help. Right then, I saw a hand break through the surface of the water in the distance, but it sunk seconds later. I rushed to the beach and waded into the water. There was no one to be seen, so I dived into the darker depths, moving further away from the shore; yet I still found nothing. I was turning back when, suddenly, something started tugging at my leg. I put my hands together and prepared to cast a spell when a voice came from down below. “Please stay. We mean no harm.” I sent a shockwave downwards to free my leg and swam back to the shore. I turned back to the sea only to find a man’s face emergin
