Bonds Undone: Truth Be Barred

Image
During that time, new evidence against the defendant came to light; Anderson had hired a private investigator to keep tabs on his wife. The PI, Samuel Martin, said in court that Jane Anderson had been regularly meeting up with a younger man, and that he had given the information to her husband a week before she was murdered. “Did you provide him with any proof?” Ferdinanz asked. “Yes, I gave him photographs of the two together,” the PI replied. “Were there any compromising photos, and do you have any copies with you?” the prosecutor inquired. “No, as far as I found out, they were only meeting for lunch,” he replied; “and yes, I do have some copies back at my apartment.” “I see. Well, she was a businesswoman, so it could have been one of her associates, right?” Ferdinanz asked. “Maybe, I don't know,” Martin replied. “He's lying! I don't know this man; I never hired him!” Cyril Anderson yelled. “Ord...

Bonds Undone: The Prints

“All rise,” the bailiff announced as Judge Charles Irwin stepped into the courtroom. The case then began when the defendant was asked, “How do you plead?” “Not guilty, your honour” he replied. “Okay, let the proceedings begin,” the judge said. It was the Jane Anderson murder case, where she was alleged to have been killed by her husband, Anderson. The defendant Cyril Anderson was put on the stand. “Mr. Anderson, did you kill your wife?” the prosecutor, Warren Ferdinanz, asked. “No, I didn't,” he replied. “Then how do you explain your fingerprints being on the murder weapon?” he asked. “I saw my wife on the floor with a knife in her stomach, so I pulled it out. What else was I supposed to do?” Anderson replied. “Don’t you know that pulling the knife out could actually lead a victim to bleed to death?” the prosecutor asked. “No, I didn’t. I’m not a doctor,” he replied. “And isn’t it interesting that only your fingerprints were found ...

The Monster in the Library

Image
As I walked into the library, I felt a pungent odour coming from the back. It smelt like rotting flesh and was beginning to make me nauseous. I closed the door behind me as I walked ahead, covering my nose with my hands, not knowing what to expect. At the entrance to the back, there was broken glass all over the floor. I walked around it and, as I reached the back, I saw a dead body lying on the floor with its hands covering his face. I recognised the body by the clothes it was in; it was Lawrence de Silva, the library’s security guard. ‘What happened here?’ I asked myself. The smell was even stronger there—almost unbearable. I looked around; there was a grubby beige backpack on the floor and some envelopes which looked like they contained letters. I walked to the front of the library and was about to call the police, but then I heard a noise. It came from between the book racks behind me. My heart began to race. I reached for my pepper spray as I turned around, b...

The Wedding Crasher

“Sorry to crash the party, honey, but I didn't get my invitation,” I said, walking in. “Hayley, what are you doing here?” Brian asked astounded. “Why, Brian; was I supposed to not be here on the most important day of your life? After all, just six months ago, it was supposed to be the most important day of our life,” I replied. “I’m sorry, Hayley, but—” he couldn't finish the sentence as Leela, his bride, said, “Gun! She has a gun!” Brian looked at my hand in fear. “Hayley, what are you doing with that gun; where did you get it from?” he asked. I could see him begin to shudder. “Oh, this thing? I just bought it today. Do you like it?” I asked, pointing it at him. “No, Hayley, don't shoot! I’m sorry for everything; I didn't mean to hurt you,” he said. Leela closed her eyes with her hands, sobbing intensely. “Really, you didn't mean to hurt me? After being together for five years and not to mention being engaged for two of it, you dumped me saying it...

The Unseen: Betrayal

‘Doctor Rhodes was weird and confusing. I wonder what he’s looking for?’ I asked myself on my way to the office. On my way back home, I went to the hospital—and what I heard was unbelievable. “Are you sure; couldn't the mistake be from your end?” I asked. “No, it's not,” he said. “Okay, now you need to do as I say to solve this issue,” he said. “I agree, doctor. I'll do anything,” I said. “Oh, no, I have left my files at the office by mistake,” I said. “Don't worry, honey, I'll get them. Just give me the keys,” Miles said. After an hour or so, he came back with the files. “How are you planning to go through all these today?” he asked. “I'll go through as much as I can,” I said. Miles tried to give me medicine, which I turned down. I went to sleep after going through most of the files; by that time, Miles was already asleep. I woke up trembling again, unable to move. After a few minutes, the light came on and Miles looked at me. “Oh, no, not again,” he...

The Unseen: In the Blood

I woke up in a hospital bed, wondering how I got there. “Oh, Mrs. Estephan, you're awake. Wait, I'll get the doctor,” a nurse said. The doctor walked in and informed me that I had a panic attack. ‘Poor Miles, he can't get a good night's sleep thanks to my issues,’ I thought. “Mrs. Estephan, I want to talk to you about your health scare?” Doctor Rhodes said. “Yes, doctor, shoot away,” I replied. “Well, you don't have any blocks in your heart, so it seems as if you had a panic attack,” he said. “Are you being treated for any health issues?” he asked. “No, I don't have any of that. I was given a clean bill of health in my yearly health check-up, which was two months ago,” I replied. “Okay, then have you been experiencing any stress? What I mean is, have there been any stressful events in your life recently?” he asked. “Well, I have been having a problem which has been causing me to have sleepless nights fueled with terror,” I replied. “What does that mean?” ...

The Unseen: Past Trauma

As I hadn't any meetings for the day, I decided not to go to the office. We packed up a few things to take to the hotel as we were moving in there until we could sell the house and purchase a new one. Miles made an appointment with the therapist. “We can go see her on our way to the hotel,” he said, putting his arms around me and holding me close. “How did I get so lucky?” I said as he kissed me. “What do you mean?” he asked. “I mean, how did I get so lucky to have a loving husband like you?” I said. “I don't know, maybe it's because you’re hot and rich,” he said, making me frown. “What did I say?” he asked. “Really, so you’re after my money?” I asked. He smiled as he said, “Just kidding babe. Besides, I did say you're hot, but all you heard was the ‘rich’ part. You’re so negative,” he said. “No, I'm not,” I said, annoyed. “How’re you doing, Mrs. Estephan, have you been able to get much sleep?” The therapist asked. “I did for the past week, but then it ha...
