Past Crimes: Part I

Image
I was unpacking my things at my new house when I noticed that a floorboard near my bed was a little out of place. I sat down and slowly pushed it to a side, only to find a hollow underneath it; and inside it were several photographs. Curious, I took them out, but what I found made me frown and squint. The pictures were of a toddler who looked a lot like me with a woman who wasn’t my mother. I went through the other photos, and one of them grabbed my attention even more: my favourite rabbit soft toy was also in it. I knew it couldn’t have been just a similar one because its right ear and eye were damaged — just like the one I had. “Is this me? Then who’s the woman in the photo?” As I went through more photos, a newspaper cutout fell from my hand. It was a death notice of the woman in the photographs. I didn’t know what to think, or even where to begin, so I decided to pay my mom a visit. I gathered all the photographs along with the newspaper cutout and rushed to the car. When I arrive...

The next day, Gavin joined me at my place to go through the files. He found the initials ‘R.G.’ on the back of some documents on a drug bust. “I guess having a fresh pair of eyes does help,” I said, wondering what it meant. And then it came to me: “Ralph Gordon!” “What? Chief Gordon? Are you nuts?” “I know it sounds ridiculous, but the chief did question me about the reasons behind me digging into my father’s case files.” “Maybe he was just being the chief.” “I know it’s crazy, but I feel it in my gut.” “Alright, what do we do? Should we report him to internal affairs?” “No, we have no proof. The initials could be anyone’s. We need to dig deep into the chief’s finances.” “Nat, if the chief is involved, the fact that you’re digging into this case may put you in danger.” “That did cross my mind, and that’s exactly why I didn’t want to involve you.” “Well, that’s why you need all the help you can get.” “Let’s try to go through as much as possible. You can sleep in the guest room ton...

Eye for an Eye: Conspiracy

The next day, I got a call from the precinct asking me to come over. When I went there, I was told of the situation. The captain said it could be one of my parents’ killers. I looked at the body and said that I was not sure. After going back home, I planned my next move. I kept in contact with the precinct to find out the progress of the case. I later went to Pete’s club called the ‘Thunderbird’ and flirted with him as well. Same as Roy, he invited me to his room. When I pulled out my gun once we were in, he said, “Oh my god, you killed Roy, didn’t you?” “No, I didn’t. He killed himself to stop me from finding out who gave you the contract to kill my parents.” I explained to him who I was; he was dumbfounded. “I am sorry, kid, but whether I talk or not, it makes no difference,” he said and pulled out a gun and pointed it at me. I shot him that instant. I tried to stop the bleeding long enough to find out the truth, but it was to no avail. He said, “Check your father’s cases,” as ...
