Darkness and Light

Matthias and Ariska were pregnant with their first child. Ariska was a believer in Dark Magic and Matthias was a believer in Light Magic. During their child’s birth, however, there were complications, and doctors said their daughter wouldn’t make it through the night. Both Matthias and Ariska prayed to their Lords, and the next day, the baby made a miraculous recovery. They told each other about their prayers and each of them insisted that it was their Lord who saved the child.

“I promised to hand her over to the Lord of Darkness when she turns two,” Ariska said.

“I promised the Lord of Light the same thing.”

 

Their arguments continued for the next two days, but eventually, the two of them forgot their promises to their Lords. When their daughter Katherine turned two, however, both the Lords appeared before them. The Lords were displeased by the turn of events, but they soon came to an agreement: Katherine would stay with each of them for six months each, every year.

Katherine grew up learning the magical arts of both Darkness and Light, but even though she enjoyed everything she learned, she grew weary of how often she had to switch between realms, and how hollow of affection the Lords’ words often were to her issues. In time, she also learned the truth behind her moving between realms and came to resent her biological parents, feeling abandoned and betrayed by them. That same resentment also grew towards her adoptive parents, the Lords of Light and Darkness, for she saw them as nothing more than her abductors.

The seeds of retribution soon began to take root within Katherine’s heart, growing ever darker the more she delved deeper into the magical arts. Katherine grew more and more powerful by the year, and by the time she turned 21, she bore within her powers of Darkness and Light which were greater than that of the two Lords combined; and it was then that she decided to wreak vengeance upon those who had wronged her.

“You are now the most powerful wielder of magic, Katherine,” the Lord of Darkness said.

Katherine, who had for so long held a gleeful smile, bore her fangs at the Lords upon hearing their praise. Wielding the powers she had so carefully harnessed for years, Katherine forced the two Lords to their knees, stealing not just their energy but their very life essence as well. The Lords of Darkness and Light soon ceased to be. But Katherine’s wrath was yet to be sated; she descended upon the mortal realm and appeared before the parents who had abandoned her, and even though they begged her for forgiveness, she showed them not a semblance of mercy. Nothing but ashes remained of them when she walked away.
