Monster Friend

My twin sister, Annie, always complained about monsters being under her bed and asked my parents to chase them away. She would often scream, making me lose sleep every day since we shared the same bedroom. One day, I decided to sleep under her bed to get her to stop complaining.

Annie pleaded with me not to do it, but I said I’d prove to her that there was nothing to worry about. Grabbing my pillow and blanket, I crawled into that narrow space and stared up into the darkness. It wasn’t long before I was beginning to fall asleep, but I was suddenly jolted by movement next to me.

I turned to my left and found myself stupefied at the sight before me: it was a humanoid girl no bigger than me, but her skin was pale blue, and she had a third eye on her forehead. I was about to scream when the girl covered my mouth and shook her head.

“Please don’t make me hide; I mean you no harm.” There was a tremble in both her voice and her hands.

My instincts told me I could trust her, so I nodded and moved back slowly. It took me a few seconds, but I mustered the courage to speak. “What are you, exactly? And why are you here?”

“I’m Svera, a faeon. I’m from a dimension that exists parallel to yours, but our world is highly unstable and unpredictable, so our parents let us stay in yours until we’re old enough to return.”

Curious to learn more about her home world, I asked Svera several questions, which sparked a long conversation between us that lasted all night. Svera disappeared into what she called “The Bridge” at dawn, a barren yet stable area between our worlds where faeons could recuperate.

The next morning’s encounter with my parents was an awkward one, to say the least. I spoke to them about Svera and said she meant no harm, but I knew they didn’t believe me. They probably assumed I was trying to help Annie and were simply happy viewing it that way.

That night, however, I talked Annie into joining me under her bed, promising her it was truly safe. She was reluctant at first, but agreed to it because I was persistent. When Svera appeared, Annie initially gasped and flinched, but I held her hand and reassured her. Svera smiled and waved before saying hi, and Annie finally let her guard down. From that day forward, Svera became our best friend, and we spent countless nights together discussing things we loved.
