An Avenging Angel

Image
I was feeling under the weather from the night before, but I went to the office anyway because I had to give an important presentation. But things weren’t as smooth as I would’ve liked them to be, so much that even my boss told me she’d cover for me halfway through. I still had more work to do even after the presentation, but she told me to take some time off until I felt better. I was disheartened that I couldn’t push through the presentation, but I was glad I could go home. I just wanted to be in the comfort of my bed. When I arrived at my house, however, I noticed my boyfriend Cliff’s car in the driveway. It was strange. His work usually ran later than mine; he didn’t tell me he was coming home early. I then remembered what my best friend Roman said just two days ago: he said he had seen Cliff at a hotel with another woman. I brushed it off as a mere business meeting and told Roman he was being paranoid, but now I wasn’t so sure. When I stepped inside, I heard a woman’s giggles comi...

The Unseen Guest

I was woken up by a sudden noise inside the house. I grabbed my bat and inspected every room, but there was no one there. All the doors and windows were locked, so there was no chance of anyone being inside. Maybe it’s a rat , I thought. The next morning, I woke up to the scent of freshly cooked food filling my room. Is Gerard back already? I rushed downstairs expecting to find my husband, but all I found was a dining table full of food and a house that was empty. I looked around, but I was the only one home. I soon found myself gripped by fear. Was I being stalked? I was about to rush upstairs when, suddenly, a voice rose behind me: “Don’t worry, it’s only me here.” I turned around to find myself stupefied; a translucent humanoid figure stood before me. A ghost? Was I being haunted? “Don’t worry, I mean you no harm,” the ghost said. “My name’s Nathan. I’ll help you around the house if you allow me to stay. I was a chef when I was alive, you see.” This was too good to be true. “How com...

Rivercrest Road

Troy and I were finally preparing for our long-awaited trip out of town. We had been planning it for ever, but work always managed to get in our way in the past. The night before the trip, however, I woke up from a weird dream; my late grandmother appeared before me and told me not to take Rivercrest Road. Nana passed away six months ago, but when she was alive, she would often warn us of certain routes and places. Every time she predicted something, it would come to pass; it was an eerie gift of foresight that equally scared us as it did leave us in awe. Now, having seen her in my dreams, I had second thoughts about taking the shortcut through Rivercrest Road. Troy, however, remained sceptical about the situation; he had only met her a couple of times and had only been warned by her once about a car accident on the route he was planning to take that day. He brushed it off as a mere coincidence, but I knew there was more to it than that. Even though he was sceptical, Troy still agreed ...

A Patient Revenge

It was our sixth wedding anniversary; Jeff and I were supposed to leave for our much-awaited vacation at the end of an exhausting year. Everything was perfectly planned, but I had to cancel at the last minute because I was needed for an upcoming cosmetics project. Jeff accused me of putting work before our marriage and stormed out of the house. I didn’t know where he was for the rest of the day. I called him several times, but he eventually switched his phone off. It was the same the following day as well; his phone was off all throughout. I dropped by his office on my way home the next day to see if he had gone there, but his colleagues said they had not seen him. I noticed that his secretary, Tiffany, was not in her seat. I asked Jeff’s colleague George whether Tiffany was out and he said she called in sick that morning. Suspicion soon snuck into my mind. There were a couple of occasions in the past where the two of them had coinciding plans that kept them away for a couple of weeks....

A Summoned Date

I was busy with office work when my phone rang. It was my sister, Carin. I dreaded answering it. Our cousin’s wedding was a month away and she was pushing me to find a date before it because she didn’t want me to go to the ceremony alone while she would attend it with her fiancé. She was persistent as ever on the phone. “Brian says he can set you up with one of his friends. Why not give it a shot?” “Why are you two so bothered by me not having a date? I have no issue going by myself.” Carin sighed, and I hung up the phone right after. She called again; I put my phone on silent. She and mom were always the same. Neither of them ever respected my boundaries. The last time Carin set me up with someone was a disaster. They can’t understand that not everyone needs a partner to be happy; I’m the happiest I’ve ever been since my breakup and now they’re trying to drag me back into dating again? I missed grandma. She was the only one who understood me. That night, I had a dream about grandma. S...

A Ghostly Appetite

It was past 3:00a.m. when I was woken up by a mysterious sound. I switched my bedside lamp on and scanned the room, but no one was there. I grabbed the metal bar and mace can I always kept next to me and stepped out of the bedroom, switching on each light as I made my way downstairs. Snow, my cat, also tagged along as I inspected every inch of the house. To my luck, I was alone. “Maybe it was a rat,” I wondered as I went back to bed, but as I switched off the lamp, the sounds returned. I repeated the process, and there was another noise yet again. This time, I was certain it was from the kitchen. Before entering, I yelled out and said the cops were on their way. There was no reply. I searched the kitchen next, but like before, I was alone. However, something strange stood out: there was a sweet scent in their air, with hints of chocolate and nuts pervading the room. I opened the fridge and looked at the chocolate bars I had recently bought; two of them were missing. “What is happening ...

A New Beginning

I was passing the mountains on my way home when a biker suddenly raced past me at a bend. Trying not to hit him, I lost control of the car and veered off the road, plunging into the river below. The windshield cracked upon impact and, before I knew it, I was sinking into a watery abyss. I held my breath and tried to open the door, but it was jammed; I kicked it several times, but it wouldn’t budge. It was not long before I couldn’t breathe anymore—I felt a sharp burn pierce my chest as my vision blurred to a dark haze. Soon, I found myself looking down at my own body by the river bank. I was sitting next to it, or rather floating just above the surface, as a paramedic continued to perform CPR on me. “Just stop, I’m already dead,” I said, seeing the desperation in her eyes. But right then, something even stranger happened. “No, you’re not, you still have a pulse,” she whispered. Did she just hear me? “Yes, I can both hear and see you. It’s a long story.” She made eye contact with me for...
