Descending Shadows: Dead End

Brandishing their swords, the villagers chased after us, cursing aloud: “Get those witches! Don’t let them escape!”

Not long after, we came across an abandoned house and decided to hide in it.

“Back in our timeline, we took down Serpians, but now we run away from a mob of villagers?” Nolan asked.

“This is different, Nolan. Those were demons, these are people. Right now, we’re no more to them than what the Serpians were to us,” I replied.

“She’s right, bro. They can’t comprehend our situation. Hurting them would make us no different from the demons we swore vengeance on,” Leslie said.

“Be that as it may, they’re not going to stop until we’re dead. It’s either us or them at this point,” Nolan said.

“He’s right. They’re nothing more than mindless murderers, and they’ve slaughtered so many of my innocent ancestors. This is my chance to wreak vengeance upon them,” Arabella said.

Her face was seething; her eyes grew cold with hatred.

“Arabella, no! These people know no better. They act out of fear and ignorance. You saw what your sister accidentally unleashed back in our timeline. It’s those possibilities that drive them to do such things.”

She loosened her clenched fists slowly, trying to breath slower.

“I’m sorry, Moon. Yes, you’re right.”

“There will always be people like them, who act too fast and hate without reason, but not everyone’s like that. You have us, don’t you?” Leslie said.

“Thank you,” she replied, as her eyes teared.

“But it’s not like these people don’t have it coming to them… They even murdered the innocent. Women’s hands and feet were both bound before they were thrown into rivers. ‘If they float, they’re witches; if they don’t, they’re innocent’. That’s the kind of logic they used. People were damned either way,” Nolan said.

“Yes, but who are we to decide that these people should be killed for those crimes? Won’t that make us no different from them?” I asked. “This isn’t like back home, Nolan. Everything isn’t black and white.”

“Fine,” he replied.

I could see he still held some anger in his heart. Perhaps the battles back home had affected him more than I thought.

“They’re coming!” said Arabella.

We all hid in different parts of the house. It was not long before the villagers barged in, kicking down the doors. I wondered what to do. We didn’t want to hurt them, but if we were to get captured, they would undoubtedly execute us.
