The Birth of a Goddess
Ever since I was a child, Mythology was a subject I adored more than anything. I loved exploring every myth and legend I could find and expanding my knowledge every single day. In time, I earned a doctorate in the subject and eventually became well-known in my field.
One night, I was about to head to bed around midnight when my doorbell rang. I opened the door to find myself facing a woman in strange clothing; and when I asked her who she was, I received a response I did not expect.
“I’m the Goddess of Social Media,” she said.
My eyes narrowed at her answer. Was it a prank? Who was this stranger? I told her to leave if she was only there to joke, but she pleaded with me as if it were a matter of life or death.
“Please! You’re the best at this from what I’ve seen and heard. I need your help if I’m going to be around.”
Her words and expressions seemed genuine. I couldn’t understand why someone would go to such an extent just for a joke, and a strange one at that. I wondered whether she was suffering from mental health issues.
I asked her to come in and led her to the living room. The woman introduced herself as Dia and said she was a new Goddess birthed by the discord that persisted among the public due to concerns about social media. She said her instincts led her to me the moment she awakened.
This was even more puzzling. Was she insinuating that with each new problem humanity faces, a new God or Goddess was born to establish an equilibrium? I asked her what she wanted me to do and she said she wasn’t sure. We were at an impasse…
Even though I knew my way around social media, I was by no means an expert in the field. And so I turned to Sam, one of my friends who was active in the industry, and requested her help. She was confused at first but decided to help anyway out of sheer curiosity. In the weeks that followed, the three of us worked together to help Dia explore what her powers were and then navigate them.
Dia found that she could form telepathic connections between herself and those who were using social media in real time. It was through this link that she was able to understand their inner workings and explore the possibilities through which she could bring them peace. It took three months for Dia to master her powers and abilities and realise the extent of the good she could do for the world. At the end of that journey, she thanked Sam and me and disappeared into the air, promising to visit us again in the future.
A week later, both Sam and I found ourselves being harassed by people who called themselves “Purists”; they had somehow learned of Dia and had taken it upon themselves to make us watch over our shoulders at all times. Their actions, however, brought Dia back to us sooner than we expected. It appeared that she no longer required people to be online in real time to look into their minds; she brought up all their insecurities and exposed their struggles to accept what they felt was true. They all left without a word.
Dia visited us once a month from that point on, bringing to existence one of the most unlikely friendships anyone could expect to experience in their lifetime. It was one I was thrilled to experience—a bond I treasured with all my heart.
