The Troubled Prince

Once upon a time, there lived a king, a queen, and their beautiful baby boy, Prince Heath. They were very happy until, one day, the queen died of pneumonia.

The saddened king soon took his grief out on the people around him. He imprisoned the royal physician for not being able to save the queen and was ruthless to his guards and servants. Anyone who made the slightest mistake was punished.

The little prince, like most children, imitated his father, and a servant boy called John, who was his friend, bore the brunt of it. Prince Heath would make fun of the way the boy dressed, calling him a beggar while beating him.

The king’s magician noticed this and decided to take action. “I can’t do anything about the king himself, but perhaps I could make the prince a better person,” he thought.

And so, the magician switched the two boys’ bodies.

Not knowing what had happened, the prince continued to bully John. The king, who was passing by at the time, slapped the boy who he thought was the servant upon noticing what was unfolding.

“Why are you hitting me, Daddy?” Prince Health cried.

“Who are you calling ‘daddy’, you beggar?” the king replied with fiery eyes.

The king then turned to his guards and told them to throw him out. By that time, John had realised what had happened; he pleaded with the king and asked him not to chase his friend away since he didn’t know what he was doing.

“What do you mean?” asked the king.

“John and I were playing outside and found this red and black fruit we had never seen before. I gave it to him as a gift since he was hungry, and he has been acting weird ever since,” the boy replied.

The magician sensed John’s solution and decided to step in.

“The Worres Fruit? How on earth did you two stumble across that of all things?” the magician said as he rushed to greet them. “Your highness, just leave the boy in prison for a full day; the effects of the fruit will wear off by then.”

The king agreed and the prince was locked away. Prince Heath sat for hours on a dirty floor, crying as he didn’t know what to do. It was then that the servant boy suddenly appeared with a pillow and a blanket.

“I’m sorry, my prince, but this is all I could do,” he said. “I hope things will change by tomorrow.”

“I don’t know what happened, but I guess I deserve this for what I did to you.” The prince was in tears. “Could you ever forgive me, John?”

“I can,” John replied, holding Prince Heath’s hands through the iron bars.

A full day passed by and the prince was finally released. The magician quickly changed the boys back to normal; by then, the prince’s attitude was changed. He became a better person and even helped the king change as well. Prince Heath later became one of the kindest kings.
