The Kingdom in the Sky

Once upon a time, in a kingdom in the sky, lived a king, a queen, and a little princess called Anastasia. The princess would look down at the earth and wonder if there were kids like her there. Meanwhile, a lonely little prince would look up at the sky and ask the same question.

One day, while the princess was playing in the clouds, she noticed the prince looking up and waved at him. However, the prince didn’t wave back; he just continued to stare at the sky. The confused princess went to her mother and said, “Mama, that prince down there is rude. He didn’t even wave back!”

The queen smiled and cradled Anastasia in her arms. “No, honey, he just doesn’t see you.”

“But he looked right at me.”

“I assure you, he can’t see us even though we can see him. Our kingdom is enchanted.”

“Can I go down sometime to play?” Anastasia asked.

“Maybe when you’re a little older, honey.” The queen smiled and hugged the princess.

Anastasia, however, was impatient. That night, while in bed, she wished to be able to play on the earth with the prince. The next morning, she woke up in a strange place.

Anastasia looked around, her heart racing as she attempted to make sense of her surroundings. But nothing was familiar; she didn’t recognise the room she was in. Not a second later, she sprung from the bed as something moved next to her. It was the prince, who had also just woken up.

“Who are you and what’re you doing in my room?” the prince asked.

“Oh, no… The wish!” Anastasia said, her eyes beginning to pool.

“I’m Aaron,” the prince said. He got off the bed and approached Anastasia. “What’s your name, and where are you from?”

“My name is Anastasia, and I’m from the kingdom in the sky.”

The prince frowned at her answer and took a step back, and it was then that the queen of the castle rushed into the room. Her pace slowed as she noticed that the intruder was a lost little girl, and a smile spread across her face as she recognised the attire she wore.

“You’re not from around here, are you?” the queen asked.

Anastasia’s eyes widened. “How did you know?”

“I once lived in the sky kingdom, too. I lost my parents when I was a little older than you and, since I had no other relatives, one night, I just wished to be here on earth. I thought I could get by on my own, but eventually, I was adopted by a kind couple in this city.

Aaron stepped forward. “How come you never told me this? Can we go to the sky kingdom?”

“It wasn’t something I wanted to share with you so soon, and no, you can’t go there just yet,” the queen replied. Then she turned to Anastasia. “You, on the other hand, must leave immediately. Your parents must be worried sick.”

“But how?” Anastasia asked.

The queen smiled and placed a bracelet in her palm. “This will help you. I’m making a few more for my family to visit there. I had one good friend back there, but we lost touch before my parents died because she moved to the capital. I wonder how she’s doing now.”

Anastasia hugged both the queen and the prince before putting the bracelet on and wishing she was back home. She vanished from Aaron’s room seconds after making her wish and appeared before her parents instantly. The king and queen hugged Anastasia together and asked her where she had been. She related the events to her parents and promised them she’d never do that again.

Two months passed by as Anastasia waited patiently for the arrival of Aaron and his parents; and it was not just a heartfelt reunion for Anastasia alone, for Aaron’s mother recognised Anastasia’s mother the second their eyes met.

“Delia, is that really you?” Anastasia’s mother asked as her eyes began to tear.

Aaron’s mother was also in tears as she rushed to hug her old friend. “I’m so sorry, Sophie… When my parents passed, I just didn’t know what to do anymore. I needed a change of scenery.”

“I heard about your disappearance, and I always wished that you were somewhere safe. I’m so glad…” Queen Sophie said.

“I wished the same for you all these years, too,” Queen Delia replied.

With the rekindling of old friendships and the formation of new ones, from that day forward, the two royal families made regular visits to each other’s kingdoms. Princess Anastasia and Prince Aaron soon became the best of friends.
