The Selkies' Curse: Part II

Image
“This is crazy.” “It’s about to get crazier, because I need your help.” “For what?” “To break the curse.” “How am I supposed to do that?” “You’re the chosen one; I’m sure of it.” “And how exactly do you know that?” “You have a seal-like birthmark on your ankle. That’s part of the prophecy our people believe.” “Just because I have a birthmark doesn’t mean I can break the curse.” “No, you have powers as well.” The selkie asked me to hold his hand. I complied. He held it to his forehead and, within seconds, visions of their past flooded my head. He was telling the truth. I then saw my mother; she was battling a monster with magic. She took it down, but another one got her from behind. I was overcome with rage. The air around me began to swirl and the ground began to shake. The selkie yelled and brought me back to my senses. I asked what his name was to thank him. He said it was Zaros. The both of us then left for my house. There, I went through my mother’s belongings in the basement and f...

The Selkies' Curse: Part I

I was swimming in the sea when I felt something touch my leg. I noticed that it was a seal and immediately swam back to the shore. I joined my friends Steph and Drake and told them what happened; Drake said it was probably a seal prince and I told him to kiss it and find out. We walked back to my house and had a long chat before the both of them left. That night, the calmness of the sea didn’t help me sleep as it did the times before. I was awoken by nightmares of seals of all things. I saw a seal crawl into my bedroom and transform into a man. I hate Drake… I went downstairs and put the TV on; a fantasy movie was running. However, even the movie brought up the same topic: a young woman kissed a seal and it turned into a man before her eyes. I switched the TV off and went back to bed. Not long after, I was woken up by the same nightmare. I decided to research the topic. An hour passed. I found myself deep in a rabbit hole of selkie lore; some considered them to be monsters, while...

Death of Love

It was Valentine's Day and I was waiting at a restaurant for Thomas. He was late again. Thomas promised he would work on our relationship the day I asked for a divorce, but it was getting clearer to me that he didn’t really mean it. I called him several times, but he didn’t pick up. I was frustrated. I was about to leave when my phone rang. It was him. He said he was called in for an important mission. He could’ve at least given me a quick call or even left a message before making me wait for over half an hour. I told him we were done and cut the call; he rang me again, but I didn’t answer. I went home and got ready for bed. Later that night, I woke up sweating. I saw Thomas getting killed in action. I grabbed the phone while my hands trembled. There was a message from him saying he was sorry for not calling me sooner. I felt guilty. I didn’t want that to be the last thing I ever said to him—I wouldn’t have been able to forgive myself if something happened to him. I was restless ...

Cursed in the Sea

It was Sunday, yet the beach was empty; a sight I had never seen in my town. It appeared that no one was taking the rumours lightly, regardless of how far-fetched they were. I turned back and resumed my journey to the bookshop when the wind carried a faint voice towards me. I looked around, but saw no one. The voice was there again; it was faint, but I could’ve sworn it was a cry for help. Right then, I saw a hand break through the surface of the water in the distance, but it sunk seconds later. I rushed to the beach and waded into the water. There was no one to be seen, so I dived into the darker depths, moving further away from the shore; yet I still found nothing. I was turning back when, suddenly, something started tugging at my leg. I put my hands together and prepared to cast a spell when a voice came from down below. “Please stay. We mean no harm.” I sent a shockwave downwards to free my leg and swam back to the shore. I turned back to the sea only to find a man’s face eme...

Stabbed in the Back

Trevor rushed over to me, yelling from the other room. “Put the TV on!” “What’s going on?” He turned on the news and my heart sank in dread; we had a homicide case to solve, and the victim was a minor. The ME was standing over the body when we arrived at the school as a couple was holding each other while crying on a bench. Trevor went to talk to them and I approached the ME. “What have you found?” I asked. “The victim is Amber Stevens, aged 16. She has seven stab wounds on her torso.” “Was the murder weapon found?” “Not yet.” The body was rushed to the morgue, while Trevor and I swept the crime scene. We only found one thing: a size-six footprint. Amber’s parents had no valuable information to give us, so we moved on to her classmates and teachers; all of them had nothing but praise for her. Later that day, the ME told us that the murder had taken place somewhere between midnight and 2:00 a.m. Moreover, she said that Amber was six weeks pregnant at the time. We then visited her house ...

“No, please don’t kill me!” “Kerry, wake up! You’re having a nightmare!” I opened my eyes to find my husband by my side. “Is it the same one again?” “Yes.” “Maybe we should make an appointment with a therapist.” “No, I don’t need a therapist; I need to know that my parents’ killer will remain behind bars.” “I’ll try my best, but there’s so much that even I can do.” “If he gets out, I’m killing him.” “Sawyer’s just six years old; I don’t want him losing his mother right now. Besides, the man has been inside for 25 years now.” “Yes, Roy, but I also know that I won’t be able to rest until he’s dead.” Roy sighed, getting to his feet. “There’s no point talking when you’re like this,” he said before leaving the room. I tried closing my eyes, but that man’s face still crept into my head. I got off the bed and went to Sawyer’s room. Roy was sitting beside him as he slept. “He’s smiling in his sleep. You think it’ll be the same if you were in jail?” I didn’t answer. I stayed with them for...

Abducted

Two children in our neighborhood had gone missing recently. In both instances, there had been a blue van parked in the vicinity. The same thing had happened six years ago, but the children were never found. It was unsettling; my husband and I were scared for our children. We weren’t the only ones. No children were allowed to ride their bicycles or play in the yard unsupervised. Moreover, we had jobs to do, so we couldn’t watch our sons constantly. We dropped them off at school and my mom picked them up until we came to get them. She kept them at her palace until we got off. One morning, however, I woke up two hours late. “Jacob, we overslept!” “What? I didn’t even hear the alarm.” I quickly rushed to the children’s room to wake them up. Their beds were empty, and the lampshades laid shattered on the floor. My heart began to pound as I frantically ran to the closet. It was empty. I checked under the beds; they weren’t there either. I called out to the boys as I felt my stomach wring at ...
