Descending Shadows: The Demon-slayer

Image
The shadows appeared suddenly, turning everything in the vicinity cold, almost freezing. It was the time evil lurks, looking for souls to devour. I could feel it in the air, I could smell the stench of rotting flesh coming from the streets. It was time. I grabbed my sword and dagger, and other gear, before rushing over to wake my little brother up. He was fast asleep, so peaceful… Like a little angel. I smiled before tapping on his shoulder and waking him up. “Is it morning already, Moon?” he asked, rubbing his eyes. “Yes, it is, and we have to go now,” I said. “Where?” he asked. “I need to drop you at the welfare centre,” I replied. “You’re going to hunt monsters again, aren’t you?” he asked with a concerned look on his face.  “Don’t worry, Jason. I’ll be back before dinner to get you,” I said. “That's what Mom and Dad said before they left and never came back,” he said, sounding skeptical. “I know, but I’m not them. I’m not going to leav...

Bonds Undone: Truth Be Barred

During that time, new evidence against the defendant came to light; Anderson had hired a private investigator to keep tabs on his wife. The PI, Samuel Martin, said in court that Jane Anderson had been regularly meeting up with a younger man, and that he had given the information to her husband a week before she was murdered. “Did you provide him with any proof?” Ferdinanz asked. “Yes, I gave him photographs of the two together,” the PI replied. “Were there any compromising photos, and do you have any copies with you?” the prosecutor inquired. “No, as far as I found out, they were only meeting for lunch,” he replied; “and yes, I do have some copies back at my apartment.” “I see. Well, she was a businesswoman, so it could have been one of her associates, right?” Ferdinanz asked. “Maybe, I don't know,” Martin replied. “He's lying! I don't know this man; I never hired him!” Cyril Anderson yelled. “Ord...

Bonds Undone: The Prints

“All rise,” the bailiff announced as Judge Charles Irwin stepped into the courtroom. The case then began when the defendant was asked, “How do you plead?” “Not guilty, your honour” he replied. “Okay, let the proceedings begin,” the judge said. It was the Jane Anderson murder case, where she was alleged to have been killed by her husband, Anderson. The defendant Cyril Anderson was put on the stand. “Mr. Anderson, did you kill your wife?” the prosecutor, Warren Ferdinanz, asked. “No, I didn't,” he replied. “Then how do you explain your fingerprints being on the murder weapon?” he asked. “I saw my wife on the floor with a knife in her stomach, so I pulled it out. What else was I supposed to do?” Anderson replied. “Don’t you know that pulling the knife out could actually lead a victim to bleed to death?” the prosecutor asked. “No, I didn’t. I’m not a doctor,” he replied. “And isn’t it interesting that only your fingerprints were found ...

The Monster in the Library

Image
As I walked into the library, I felt a pungent odour coming from the back. It smelt like rotting flesh and was beginning to make me nauseous. I closed the door behind me as I walked ahead, covering my nose with my hands, not knowing what to expect. At the entrance to the back, there was broken glass all over the floor. I walked around it and, as I reached the back, I saw a dead body lying on the floor with its hands covering his face. I recognised the body by the clothes it was in; it was Lawrence de Silva, the library’s security guard. ‘What happened here?’ I asked myself. The smell was even stronger there—almost unbearable. I looked around; there was a grubby beige backpack on the floor and some envelopes which looked like they contained letters. I walked to the front of the library and was about to call the police, but then I heard a noise. It came from between the book racks behind me. My heart began to race. I reached for my pepper spray as I turned around, b...

The Morhex: Into the Unknown

Image
“No, please, don't kill me!” I shouted in fear for my life, putting my hands out in front of me as a fanged monstrosity came at me. It was ten feet tall and had crimson skin. ‘Is this it? Is this how my life ends?’ I asked myself as I closed my eyes. I kept my eyes closed for a few seconds, but nothing happened. Right then, there was a loud sound which made me open my eyes. To my amazement, I saw a girl with red hair standing in front of me with her back facing me. The monster was lying on the ground before her, possibly dead. ‘Wait, what just happened? Who she is, and how did she stop the monster?’ I asked myself in shock. The girl then turned around and looked at me before turning back at the monster. It got back to its feet and rushed towards her in rage as she raised her hands, uttering words I didn't  understand and raising the monster to the sky. ‘What the hell is going on here?’ I asked myself as I watched the monster scream in agony before my ...
