Descending Shadows: Into the Dark

Image
I was lost. I couldn't think straight, not with the kids in danger. I couldn't slay the Nazragadhs without putting them in harm's way. But right then, Arabella teleported all of the children away from the monsters and close to her. "Get them to safety!" I yelled. She nodded and teleported with them. And with the opening Arabella gave us, we charged forth and began to hew each Nazragadh, one by one. Moments later, we heard screams from the distance. "It's Arabella!" Leslie shouted. We rushed over there to find Arabella and the children already recaptured by three Nazragadhs. Arabella tried to break free from their grip, but she was out of breath. She was out of magic. I had no other option, so I decided to take a gamble; I dropped my blade and slowly walked towards the monsters, raising my arms to let them know I had surrendered. "Moon, what're you doing?" Nolan yelled, but Leslie held him back. Everyone was ...

Descending Shadows: Entrapped

I picked up my sword and joined Nolan and Leslie in the battle. We cut down many of the monsters, but the potency of the chemical began to wear off the longer we fought. Soon after, they weren’t turning into ash anymore. Arabella teleported their severed body parts so that they wouldn’t be able to regenerate. “Arabella, can you teleport us home?” “I’m not sure, Moon, but I’ll try. It’s as if this planet itself is dampening my powers.” That seemed to be the case ever since we teleported out of our world. I wondered what exactly was going on. Nevertheless, we needed a contingency plan, so I asked the twins if their parents had an office or lab in the house. They nodded and led me to a hidden room in the basement. There, I found some files and journals containing information about the compound. However, it was all written in their native language, so I took it to Arabella to see if she could decipher it. By the time I went upstairs, all the monsters that had arrived at th...

Descending Shadows: Night Raid

Image
It was not long after we left the house that we were pursued by more monsters. The alien twins clung to me, trembling in fear. I told them that everything would be alright; that we would protect them, and everyone else, at all costs. They smiled and hugged me. The twins stayed with the children and the others who were unarmed as the rest of us walked up ahead and met the monsters in battle. The fight was long—one of the longest I had ever had. These monsters were stronger than the Serpians, but we cut them down, one by one, watching them turn to ashes as they crumbled to the ground. Once the battle was one and every last monster was slain, we decided to take a small rest and look for food. Everyone was famished, especially the children. More than food, what I needed was water. Moreover, every part of my body ached; I could barely move about after that clash. Another issue that crept into our midst was sundown. This was an unknown terrain, and if we were to aimlessly wa...

Descending Shadows: A Relentless Foe

“Just what are they?” Leslie asked, standing motionless in shock. “I have no idea, but we need to leave!” I yelled. A group of giant monsters approached us. They were each two-headed, with six arms. We scurried away in fear, but the monsters caught up with us. One of them grabbed one of us, forcing me to draw out my sword. I sliced off two of its arms in one stroke, but to my astonishment, they grew back. “What the hell?” I yelled. There was no escaping them at the time. Those of us with weapons met the monsters in battle. But frustration was not far behind, for we grew weary of their regenerative abilities. I even decollated one monster, but both its heads slowly slithered to its body and reattached themselves. Defeating them was a task that seemed impossible. Never had I been that daunted. “This is ridiculous! We need to get out of here!” Nolan said. “Arabella, can you teleport us?” Leslie asked. “Not yet. I need to regain my strength before perfor...

Descending Shadows: Breakout

They broke down the cabin doors and came at us, wielding swords while cursing us and calling us “witches” and “devil worshippers”. “What do we do now?” Leslie asked. “We’ll have to stay calm for now. We’ll find a way out of this,” I replied. They bound us and took us back to the village. One of them left to alert the king, while the others locked us in a dungeon. One man remained to guard us while the others left. “There will be no more resurrections this time. We’ll make sure to rid your ashes to the sea,” he said. “If we were truly witches or devil worshippers, don’t you think we would’ve used our powers to harm you and get away, already?” I asked. The man frowned and scratched his head. “I don’t know… But one thing’s for sure, that woman right there is Christina. We already burnt her at the stake and here she is with you lot. And what’s similarly bizarre is your attire.” “You’re wasting your breath, Moon. They’re all savages and dimwits,” said Arabel...

Descending Shadows: Dead End

Brandishing their swords, the villagers chased after us, cursing aloud: “Get those witches! Don’t let them escape!” Not long after, we came across an abandoned house and decided to hide in it. “Back in our timeline, we took down Serpians, but now we run away from a mob of villagers?” Nolan asked. “This is different, Nolan. Those were demons, these are people. Right now, we’re no more to them than what the Serpians were to us,” I replied. “She’s right, bro. They can’t comprehend our situation. Hurting them would make us no different from the demons we swore vengeance on,” Leslie said. “Be that as it may, they’re not going to stop until we’re dead. It’s either us or them at this point,” Nolan said. “He’s right. They’re nothing more than mindless murderers, and they’ve slaughtered so many of my innocent ancestors. This is my chance to wreak vengeance upon them,” Arabella said. Her face was seething; her eyes grew cold with hatred. “Arabella, no! Thes...
